I've done the Dead Man's Respite quest several times. My last playthrough I hadn't been to the Bard College, but happened upon the dungeon. I went in and explored a bit but the ghost didn't appear. I cleared out the dungeon anyway, and got King Olif's Verse book. Later when I went to the Bard's College the first time, I talked to the guy with the quest marker, and the book is unreadable.
